Los reforzadores positivos son aquellos estímulos o consecuencias que siguen a una conducta y que la persona percibe como satisfactorios o beneficiosos. A través de estos reforzadores, se busca incrementar la probabilidad de que una persona repita o realice una determinada acción en el futuro. En otras palabras, los comportamientos que reciben un refuerzo positivo tienen más probabilidades de repetirse, ya que están acompañados de gratificaciones, premios o recompensas que la persona valora como positivas.
Es fundamental que el refuerzo positivo sea percibido como tal por la persona. Es decir, el estímulo debe ser realmente atractivo o deseado para que tenga el efecto esperado.
